I LOVE SURPRISES.
La la la, semi-huge drive-by picspam of someone you'd never expect. I'm not even being sarcastic, you seriously won't guess who it is (unless you have really sneaky investigative skills!) REALLY, IT'S SUPER RANDOM.

When I was little, I wanted to marry Jimmy Stewart from The Philadelphia Story, Eric from The Little Mermaid, and young Elvis. TRUE STORY.

Now, before we get on, I've been listening to this on repeat for the past two days, so you should as well as you scan through these photos and get nostalgic for a time that we never experienced (BUT OH HOW I WISH WE DID!)

Love Me - Elvis Presley

OH HEY, REMEMBER HOW HE GOT DRAFTED AT THE HEIGHT OF HIS POPULARITY? WASN'T THAT INSANE?

ANYWAYS, I don't mean to spoil the surprise, but this picspam was actually born out of a 50s/60s American pop culture picspam I wanted to do (BECAUSE, UM, I AM OBSSESSED WITH THE 50S AND 60S. PARTICULARLY THE 60S.) but I got so distracted, it kind of turned into it's own thing. And yes, this was what I was doing in my study breaks yesterday and today >:(

BUT WAIT! I'M NOT DONE! I also found that a really, really, ridiculously amazing thing to do when you want to procrastinate IS TO YOUTUBE VIDEOS FROM THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES. I started with the Tempations and other Motown stars from the 60s when [info]glassbomb posted her Motown Mix, but then I started doing it for Elvis and OMFG OMFG OMFG, WATCH THESE AMAZING VIDEOS.

"That's All Right," from his Sun Records days (AMAZING) set to a montage of video clips from early on:

Performing "Heartbreak Hotel" on some TV show in 1956 (OMFG, THE SCREAMING GIRLS! Amazing):

"Jailhouse Rock," 1957:

Performing "Hound Dog" on national television 1956? IDK what show, clearly before the waist-up days:

Performing "Love Me" acapella on The Ed Sullivan Show, 1956:

"Stuck on You," 1960:

Talking about Rock and Roll springing from rhythm and blues & performing "Blue Suede Shoes" from the sit-down portion of his 1968 comeback show (SO GOOD, SO GOOD!):

"Trying To Get To You," 1968 comeback show:

And saving the best for last (not a video, but most definitely the best):

LOL, ELVIS OF ARABIA.

OKAY, that's all I have. WHICH ACTUALLY MAKES ME REALLY SAD. D: However, I do have a paper due tomorrow at midnight that I haven't read anything for or even started to write, so I should probably get moving. Two papers and two exams to go til freedom! Wish me luck.

Wait, I actually did read them. Are you talking about the devout Muslim and/or how he makes Angela a mixtape? If so, LOLworthy, indeed.

Yes and yes! IDK I find it hilarious (but weird?) how they need to specify that stuff. HOWEVAR, this devout Muslim is clearly my soulmate. I HOPE THEY CAST SOMEONE PRETTY.

Yeah I agree, I wasn't all that surprised about TR either. To be honest, I've never been a big fan of George, so I wasn't too broken up about it. BUT RATHER, I was kind of flailing for the ship that I can't remember if you actually like or not but I've been going crazy for lately?

Oh, right, yes! I like it; I'm not nearly as !!! about them as you are, but they're cute together. I just didn't like Lexie's whole, "Teach me...while I take off my clothes!" But Mark is adorable around her, so I'm cool with it. :-)

HAHAHA, I saw that one when I was Googling and considered telling you that was him.

Umm, speaking of, my friend showed me pictures of a friend of hers who's studying in Sweden (but not in Stockholm, so we'll probably never meet) who is HALF PERSIAN/HALF SWEDISH. Is that not, like, the most attractive sounding combination ever? And he is quite attractive. And "not available to women" according to my friend. BUT STILL, HEEEY-O.

I wasn't bloooown away at first by the first couple of photos she showed me, but there were a couple where I was just like, "Daaaaamn, girl!" He definitely looks more Persian than Swedish, though.

I just made my travel arrangements today! I leave on January 20th (yes, that January 20th) and arrive in Sweden on the morning of the 21st. I AM EXCITED/TERRIFIED/ANTICIPATORY/ANXIOUS/ETC.

I know! My mom even suggested flying from D.C. I was like, "Lolol, okay, Mom." I'll be taking Swedish, a class on radical politics, one on the EU, and Swedish Film/TV Culture (but the last one's a maybe -- I want to see what it's like first).

HAHAHA, I definitely envision you actually saying "lolol" which is hilarious. Those classes though! They sound amazing! One thing I realized when I went to England was how little I know about the EU and European politics etc. and it was actually really embarassing because people over there are so well-versed in everything that's going on everywhere, and obviously since they're in the EU, it's something that always comes up. SOUNDS AWESOME!

I think I'll be in DC for the inauguration!!!!!!!! Nowhere remotely close to any of the action, I'm sure, but I'll be sure to take pictures!

THAT IS REALLY ADORABLE.

And yes! I think I inherited the love from my mom, who legit wanted to have his babies when she was sixteen growing up in Pakistan. She still talks about how her and all her girlfriends would go to the movies the night his films opened and they'd see them ALL. When I was growing up we had a huuuuge VHS collection, and for some reason Blue Hawaii was my favorite. IDK why nor do I really even remember the plot anymore (aside from Elvis wearing really short shorts) because it's been so long, but whenever I see an Elvis film on TV I get a little/a lot !!!!ey!

It's just crazy to think that that man actually existed. That his gyrating hips were banned from television because they unleashed a sexually repressed nation and THE FACT THAT HE GOT DRAFTED. I STILL CAN'T GET OVER THAT. Man, the 50's/60's before 63 were such a simpler time.

AND YES, THAT VOICE! Good stuff.

HAHAH, I KNOW. I'm lame. But it's okay! It'll come back later tonight and all will be right in the world. Can you tell that I'm hopped up on caffeine and cold medication? Just a little bit?

this one's my favorite, btdubs. I really want to have a marathon of cheesy lame/awesome Elvis movies now. But alas, I'm stuck reading/writing about the effect of violent media on children, WHICH, BY THE WAY, IS REALLY HUGE AND FUCKED UP. It's scary to think that it's so prevalent in our society and people profit off of that shit because it really puts all of us in danger in the long run. Blerg. :/

AH, yes, there is nothing like the sight of a lanky man in a chair.

I love how almost everything about Elvis is so delightfully cheesy and lame! We used to have this Elvis-shaped clock (my mom, aunt, and grandmother have this tradition where every year at Christmas they get each other Elvis memorabilia gag gifts). His legs swung as the seconds ticked!

BUT HEY, winter break is within grabbing distance and you can totally have an Elvis marathon then! IT'S SO CLOSE, you'll literally start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel once the paper's all written up (is it on media news media or media movies media or both?)!

...can you tell I've been giving myself this "IT'S RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!!!" pep talk all week?

AH, yes, there is nothing like the sight of a lanky man in a chair.
You know, I never actually realized that until you said it, but you're quite right.

His legs swung as the seconds ticked!
HA! I love it. There's something so innocent and wonderful to the mania that surrounded him, I don't know how anyone could dislike the man. Of course, in my mind, he's always the fit, trim, dreamboat who romances the girls and randomly breaks into song between horribly (awesome?) over-acted scenes and ridiculous fights. It kind of makes me sad that he's become a cliche though? Because his story is kind of really fascinating.

Okay, now that I've got your little pep talk, I know I can make it to the end. I have two bitchtastic exams coming up this week, but...THURSDAY! THURSDAY AND THEN FREEDOM!

ETA: is it on media news media or media movies media or both?
It was on media as in film/TV/video game/internet media! It's crazy, actually, how conclusive all the studies are about the effect of violence on kids. I don't think it would be right to censor anything, obviously, but I bet parents just have no idea (or think it's a sham) because if they did, they would NOT be buying their kids some of the stuff they get.

Hee, thanks! There's something so wonderfully charming about the late 50s and Elvis mania and adorable teenage girls who shriek their heads of whenever his tone of voice shifts, let alone he moves his hips. I don't know! I just find it so cool to look back at, especially given where we are today.

I didn't even know he got drafted.
No worries! I still don't really know how or why though? Because it was the late 50s and I didn't realize that people got drafted when the country's not at war? Hm. But yeah, he was stationed in Germany for two years and became a private. It's such a crazy thing to think about though! Like, what would Anna do if (GOD FORBID) Zef got shipped off to Iraq tomorrow? I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE A WORLD LIKE THAT.

Oh by all means, steal away! I feel like I'm always trying out new formats, but I agree, this one's my favorite. I'm probably gonna stick to it from now on!
